Should Your B2B Brand Run ChatGPT Ads? Here's What the Data Says
Key Takeaways
It's big, fast. OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days. By September, 43.4% of ad-eligible US users had seen an ad.
B2B software got there first. Eight of the top ten advertisers by global impression share in June were B2B SaaS or productivity brands.
The proof is thin. One public B2B test spent $2,319, earned 739 clicks, and produced zero qualified leads. Google Search produced two in the same test.
Search copy flops here. Top advertisers write about 98% new copy for ChatGPT.
Ads don't change the answer. OpenAI says ads do not influence what ChatGPT says. A slot under the answer and a mention in it are two different jobs.
Less than a year ago, ChatGPT had no ads. Now it has a billion-dollar ad business, and your competitors are already in it.
OpenAI itself says ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days. Meanwhile your buyers are asking ChatGPT to compare vendors, and a sponsored result is sitting right under the answer.
So should your B2B brand buy in? Maybe. Just not the way you buy Google Ads. Below: the data, the catch, and a plan.
How Fast Did ChatGPT Ads Go From Zero to a Billion Dollars?
OpenAI started testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. The pilot was a velvet-rope affair, with a reported $200,000 minimum commitment.
Then came May 5. OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager to US businesses with CPC bidding and no minimum spend. Anyone with a credit card and a landing page could play.
Less than 200 days after launch, OpenAI says, ChatGPT Ads reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate. (Run rate projects a year of revenue at the current pace. It's still a very big number.)
Reach followed. Graphite and Similarweb found that 43.4% of ad-eligible US users had seen at least one ad by September, and that half of the top ten advertisers now run more ads on ChatGPT than on Meta.

From pilot to billion-dollar run rate.
ChatGPT Ads has expanded rapidly, but scale alone doesn't prove that it converts B2B buyers.
Reached in fewer than 200 days, according to OpenAI.

Who Is Buying ChatGPT Ads? Your B2B Software Competitors
Look at who showed up first. Similarweb found that eight of the top ten advertisers by global impression share in June were B2B SaaS or productivity brands. Monday.com alone held 5.05% of global impressions. The top five together held nearly 17%.
Makes sense. B2B buyers already use AI to size up tools, workflows, and vendors, and software companies saw that early. These buyers type blunt questions into the box. We wrote about what happens when those questions turn ugly in What Does ChatGPT Say About Your Business When You Aren't Looking?
Graphite studied more than 98,000 ads and 8,000 landing pages to map the space. One pattern jumps out: the top ten advertisers sell something a buyer can use in one sitting.
Do ChatGPT Ads Work for B2B? Not Yet, Not Reliably
Workshop Digital ran one of the first public B2B tests and published the numbers.
Real Campaign Results
Cheaper clicks. Fewer qualified leads.
Workshop Digital's early B2B test compared ChatGPT advertising against Google Search.
Workshop Digital test, published August 26, 2026. ChatGPT spend: $2,319 for 69,630 impressions and 739 clicks. One advertiser's results, not a market-wide benchmark.
Their verdict: Google Search stays the primary channel for capturing high-intent demand, ChatGPT may work for awareness, and it's "far too early to write off" the platform.
Zoom out and the numbers stay modest. Graphite and Similarweb put the US click-through rate at 0.73% through September 16, while Brazil (1.91%) and Mexico (1.55%) run well ahead. SE Ranking looked at more than 50,000 commercial prompts and found ads on about 26% of them, always below the answer. About 14% of those ads had little to do with the prompt.
This is no money printer, and anyone who says it is wants to sell you something. (Yes, we sell things. We're showing our math.)
We still say test it. The channel is young, clicks cost half what Google charges in that test, and CTR is up 112% since launch, per Graphite. The brands learning now will own the playbook when everyone else shows up.
Why Does Your Google Ads Copy Die in ChatGPT?
Because buyers ask ChatGPT full questions instead of typing keywords. Graphite found that top advertisers write about 98% new copy for ChatGPT instead of recycling search ads. Recycled headlines read like a billboard dropped into a conversation, because that's what they are.
Workshop Digital's tests add useful detail:
- Be specific in your targeting hints. Keyword-style context hints beat conversational ones, 1.2% CTR to 0.9%.
- Front-load the message. Headlines and descriptions got truncated sooner than expected, so lead with the audience, the offer, and the reason to click.
- Use real images. Industry-specific images pulled a 1.2% CTR. Generic branded graphics managed 0.9%.
Write the ad like a useful answer. Target it like a sniper. Don't mix up those two jobs.
And what are you offering? The winners sell things buyers can use right now: interactive tools, templates, free trials. "Download our 40-page whitepaper" is not that.
Why Do the First Few Turns of a Conversation Matter So Much?
Graphite found that the first few turns of a ChatGPT conversation get the highest click-through rates and the largest share of impressions. That tracks with human behavior. The first question is where the buyer's problem is freshest and their intent is loudest.
Roughly 51% of impressions land in turns 1 through 3, according to reporting on the Graphite and Similarweb study. CTR is also strongest early in the conversation. Bid like it. Pay for the opening exchange, while the buyer is still deciding.
What Happens When a Buyer Types Your Brand Name Into ChatGPT?
This one should worry you. A buyer types "Compare [your company] vs. alternatives," and a competitor's sponsored result may appear below the answer.
That makes brand defense worth testing. Pay attention to prompts that name your company. Then examine the prompts that name your competitors, the same way they're coming after yours.
One catch: OpenAI says advertising does not influence ChatGPT's answers. The ad is a sticker on the page. If the answer above it calls your product clunky, your ad is a sponsored link to a brand the machine just trashed.

How Do You Run ChatGPT Ads Without Lighting Money on Fire?
We run B2B ChatGPT campaigns on a four-pillar framework.
1. Conversational copy engine
Write net-new ad copy around the problem a buyer describes. Map every angle to a real question.
2. First-turn bidding
Shape bids to win the opening exchanges, where CTR peaks and the buyer's intent is hottest.
3. Brand defense and conquesting
Run two plays at once. Protect your name when buyers prompt about you. Capture the buyer when they prompt about a competitor.
4. Modular landing page hubs
Graphite found that most advertisers use five or fewer landing pages, with feature, pricing, and product pages the most common. Don't send every click to your homepage. Build pages that match the prompt: a solution page, a pricing page, a comparison page.
Campaign Framework
Four pillars for smarter ChatGPT advertising.
Build campaigns around buyer conversations while keeping creative, targeting, and landing pages aligned.
Conversational copy
Write original ads around the questions and problems buyers describe.
Early-turn strategy
Prioritize high-intent opportunities near the beginning of conversations.
Brand defense
Test brand and competitor contexts while monitoring what AI says organically.
Modular landing pages
Match each offer to a relevant solution, pricing, or comparison page.
Your first 30 days
- Install the conversion pixel first. You can't judge a channel you can't measure.
- Audit your search alignment. Pull your top-intent Google queries and rewrite each one as the natural-language question a buyer would type.
- Launch 20 to 30 creative angles. Aim each at one specific pain point.
- Lead with an instant-value offer. An interactive demo, a template, a free trial. Something a buyer can finish in one sitting.
- Start small and track qualified leads. There's no minimum spend, so start small and measure leads. Keep Google running for high-intent demand.
Ads Buy You a Slot. Citations Win the Business.
Most ad vendors skip this part. Our Marketing Truth #4 says those that get cited get the business. A sponsored slot disappears the second your budget does. A citation in the answer doesn't.
Search is now split between Google and AI engines, and you need to show up in both. We unpacked that dual-engine reality in Welcome to the Party, Newsweek. Buyers also start forming opinions long before they hit an ad, which is why mindshare leads to intent.
Run the ads to learn fast. Do the AI visibility work so the answer above the ad is on your side. Sextant, our proprietary analysis backend, tracks your AI visibility, so you can see whether the answer above the ad improves while the campaign runs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager on May 5, 2026 with CPC bidding and no minimum spend. Ad trackers report a $25 daily budget floor in established markets. In one public B2B test, the average cost per click was $3.14. Your real number depends on your category and how many competitors bid on the same conversations.
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
Logged-in adults on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans in markets where ads are live. The pilot started in the US on February 9, 2026, and by September 43.4% of ad-eligible US users had seen at least one ad, per Graphite and Similarweb.
Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?
No, according to OpenAI: "Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides." Ads are labeled and sit apart from the answer. Paying for a slot does not earn you a citation, so you still need to earn mentions in the answer itself.
What is a good click-through rate for ChatGPT ads?
Graphite and Similarweb put the US average at 0.73% through September 16, 2026. Brazil (1.91%) and Mexico (1.55%) run higher. One B2B test averaged 1.1%. Treat those as rough benchmarks, because the channel is young and the data is thin.
Should a B2B company choose ChatGPT Ads over Google Ads?
Not yet. In the one public B2B test we found, Google Search still produced the qualified leads and ChatGPT produced none. Run ChatGPT as a small, separate test budget and judge it on learning and awareness first. Keep Google for high-intent demand.
What happens when a competitor's ad shows up on my brand name?
It happens often enough that you need a plan. Run a brand-defense campaign on prompts that name you, and fix what the organic answer says about you at the same time. Our Generative AI Brand Defense Playbook walks through the audit.
How do I measure ChatGPT ad results?
Install the conversion pixel before you spend anything, track qualified leads because clicks alone mislead, and watch branded search and direct traffic for lift. Pair that with an AI visibility check, so you can see whether the organic answer improves while the ads run.
